This must be the week for repeats. I'm writing on an issue I have written on before again today. But yesterday I was visiting my new granddaughter. Her two older sisters ( 4 and 3 years old) were running around playing. They were eating strawberries and grapes for their snack and it reminded me how important it is to set good examples with our kids and grandkids.
It used to annoy me that my daughter in law didn't allow the girls to have cookies or anything with a lot of sugar in it. But now I am very happy she instilled in them to eat only healthy snacks from the very beginning of their lives. Now they don't crave unhealthy snacks, they don't even ask for them. Don't get me wrong the girls have a cookie or a sucker every once in awhile but not very often. I'm positive my son's 3 daughters will never struggle with their weight. Plus another positive thing is the girls are calm and are never hyper.
Now I'll move on to my daughter. She has 4 kids and she is on the total opposite end of the spectrum. Her kids eat on a daily basis cookies, candy, ding dongs, the list goes on. I guess the best way to describe it is they have a steady diet of junk food. My daughter's two girls have already struggled with their weight and her 2 boys so far have escaped it. However, the boys are constantly hyped up and rowdy.
Unfortunately I was guilty of the very same thing with my kids. My daughter is only following in my foot steps. My mother and grandmother was also guilty of using food as a reward. I really believe it is a learned behavior. Since I have struggled with being overweight all of my adult life, I wish from the bottom of my heart that my Mom and my Grandmother would have instilled good eating habits in me from the beginning of my life.
It's never to late to start over. I'm going to focus on only buying healthy snacks and encouraging my daughter's kids to eat healthy.
Until Next Time ... Eat an apple for your afternoon snack.
